EVOLUTION AND PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONS OF THE GENERA WITHIN POLYGONACEAE IN CONNECTION WITH BIOGENESIS OF PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS

A scheme of assumed phylogenetic links of the genera from Polygonaceae is presented on the basis of expert assessment. It has been found that phenolic compounds are valuable chemotaxonomic markers of Polygonaceae and therefore may be used in sys-tematics when solving moot points and establishing phylogenetic links between taxa. Differentia-tion of the family Polygonaceae took place correlatively with biogenesis and accumulation of phenolic compounds in taxa of different levels. All studied genera of Polygonaceae are characterized by a complex of primitive chemical characters (presence of anthraquinones, fla-vonols with 3–0-type of the substitution, proanthocyanidins, and stilbenes).
